On 25th July 1940 the Australian 16th Garrison Battalion was formed in Sydney to guard the three Camps 6,7,8 at Hay. Over 200 of those who enlisted from Hay during WW2 served in the Hay Garrison.. On 5th July 1943 the strength of the Garrison was increased from 546 to 688.
On 25th May 1943 Hay outpost of 41 Heavy Wireless Unit began operations and propaganda radio broadcasts to the Japanese in the north
